Promoting caring careers

This year, we had the privilege of attending several key events to promote job opportunities at Uniting Country SA, including the Port Pirie Career Expo, Whyalla Career Expo, Port Augusta Career Expo, SA TAFE Careers Expo, and the University of South Australia – Whyalla Campus.

These events provided valuable opportunities to connect with potential candidates and showcase the diverse career paths available within Uniting Country SA across our various programs and services. They also allowed us to engage directly with the community, raising awareness about the impactful work we do and attracting passionate individuals committed to making a difference in regional communities.

Through our participation in these expos, we strengthened our presence in the community, built meaningful connections, and inspired individuals to join us in our mission to support and empower those in need across the region.

The Hope campaign: Elevating youth worker roles

To attract and retain skilled staff, we launched the Hope Campaign, a targeted recruitment initiative aimed at redefining youth worker roles as meaningful career paths rather than casual positions. The campaign featured a staff-led TV commercial and a dedicated landing page, successfully aligning our team and highlighting the professional opportunities within residential care.

This strategic effort has strengthened our workforce and enhanced service delivery across all residential care locations.

Enhancing residential care and workforce development

The Residential Care program provided essential support to 38 children and young people across nine houses in Port Pirie, Port Augusta, and Kadina. Our focus remains on delivering a safe, stable, and nurturing environment for those under the Guardianship of the Minister.

Supporting transitions to positive care pathways

In 2023-2024, 14 young people transitioned out of residential care into more suitable living arrangements. Of these, 3 moved into foster care, 5 transitioned to kinship care, 2 were reunified with their parents, and 4 were placed in alternative settings. These transitions reflect our commitment to supporting young people in finding long-term, supportive environments that meet their needs.

Strengthening our workforce

Our team includes 68 dedicated youth workers who play a crucial role in the care and support of children and young people in our residential houses. Their commitment is vital in helping residents navigate their experiences and achieve a sense of belonging and security.

Introducing a therapeutic lead for enhanced care

To further improve our therapeutic approach, we introduced a Therapeutic Lead position, filled by a qualified counsellor with expertise in child development, positive behaviour support, and applied behaviour analysis. This role supports staff and young people in achieving safety, stability, and intentional growth, enhancing the overall quality of care.
